A letter from Smith's mother to the Military Secretary at the Horse Guards, London, on behalf of her son's application for a first commission in 1859, stated that at the time he would have preferred a commission in the Canadian Rifle Regiment, since his father was a Canadian, and he had "relations in that country". Obviously this could not be arranged, however, and Smith wound up, by what route it is not certain, in the 78th. Judging from a number of letters which his parents wrote to the Horse Guards, Colonel Smith had chosen to retire in Dublin, Ireland.
