Feilden had served with the 72nd, Duke of Albany's Highlanders, at the siege and fall of Sebastopol in the Crimea. He, Captain Henry Frederick Rowley, and Surgeon Valentine Mumbee Macmaster were the only officers to serve with the 78th in Halifax who were members of the Royal United Services Institution. The latter two were "Annual Members"; but Feilden was a "Life Member", and also one of 238 "Corresponding Members of the Council.”  This might suggest that Feilden had a higher than average interest in the profession of soldiering. He was accompanied to Halifax by his wife and by a female servant.
